Did Adele Really Break her Grammy in half for Beyonce?

After winning the Grammy Album of the Year for 25—her fifth of the night— Adele kicked off her emotional speech by suggesting she might not, well, actually take the award:

“I can’t possibly accept this award, and I’m very humbled, and I’m very grateful and gracious, but the artist of my life is Beyoncé.” So would Adele actually give the golden gramophone—

her fifth statue of the night—over to Beyoncé? As the credits closed on the televised broadcast, the answer seemed to be no. But when photos started circulating of Adele clutching two pieces of her final Grammy on stage, a rumour spread through social media like wildfire.

The answer, sadly, seems to be no. In a backstage video from the Grammys, you can see Adele sheepishly slink backstage and hand over her broken statue in order to grab a fresh one. Any breakage, it appears, was accidental.

It’s possible Adele may have jokingly proffered one half to Beyoncé. Cameras caught the Lemonade singer seemingly cracking up at the gesture after mouthing “thank you” and “so beautiful” at the speech Adele dedicated to her.

But at the end of the night, when both Adele and Beyoncé posed with their entire statue haul, the broken Grammy was nowhere to be seen. Adele had all five of hers.

The Grammys have, in the past, been marked by controversy and celebrity feuds. (Something the organization itself seems very aware of.) But between the devout enthusiasm of multiple-winner Chance the Rapper and the deeply supportive trifecta of megastars Beyoncé, Adele, and Lady Gaga setting the tone, the 2017 ceremony was marked with love, friendship, and grateful tears.

And despite dedicating her entire speech to a singer that many headlines tried to turn into her rival, Adele even doubled down on her kind onstage words about Beyoncé when speaking to the press backstage. Putting some of her homegrown Tottenham spins on it, Adele said, “My view is kind of, ‘what the fuck does she have to do to win album of the year?’”

The answer to that question is still unclear, but if anyone can figure it out, it would be Beyoncé—who certainly won’t be settling for half of someone else’s Grammy when she finally does win album of the year.
